As the pregnant belly grows, naturally, a number of questions arise about what to consider when buying a baby mattress for your upcoming child. You are probably browsing the internet for articles on “Best baby mattress – best in test” and reading them curiously to give your child the best start in life. We’ve published a post on our blog about what to consider when choosing a baby mattress. Read our full Baby Mattress Guide.
In short, you should choose a baby mattress made from chemical-free and allergy-friendly materials for your child. Pay attention to the materials the mattress is filled with and what it is covered in. Breathability of the materials is crucial for your little one’s sleep. If you buy a mattress made of artificial and synthetic materials, the body cannot breathe on the material, and your child’s sleep will be disturbed by heat and sweat.
The materials in Cocoon's baby mattresses are all organic, chemical-free, and allergy-friendly. Additionally, we place a high priority on breathability. Our natural materials are designed by nature to ventilate, which will greatly benefit your baby’s sleep.
The baby mattress must support your baby as they sleep so that the little body lies comfortably and safely, ensuring the best and most undisturbed sleep.
Last but not least, you should, of course, choose a baby mattress that fits the size of your baby’s crib or cot.
Our popular Kapok baby mattress 60x120 cm and Natural Latex baby mattress 60x120 cm fit most standard cribs on the market. But we also offer wonderful baby mattresses that fit Sebra beds, Leander, Stokke, and Oliver Wood cribs.
When buying a baby mattress, it’s important that the mattress matches the size of the crib. The mattress should reach all the way to the edges of the crib so that there is no gap where the baby could roll into and become trapped.
The next question is how thick the mattress for your baby should be. The Danish Health Authority recommends that a baby mattress be at least 5 cm thick and have a firm filling. A baby mattress must not be soft. So, although your Cocoon baby mattress may feel a bit firm when you receive it, that’s exactly how it should be. We follow all the recommendations in the field, so you can safely choose a Cocoon baby mattress for your child.
You can benefit from using one of our chemical-free and breathable Kapok mattress protectors on top of the baby mattress. It adds extra comfort to the baby, while also helping to protect the baby mattress underneath.
Now the practical questions begin, as life with a little one in the house naturally involves a lot of extra tasks during the day. Therefore, it’s important that the products you choose for your child are practical and hygienic.
You cannot wash your Cocoon baby mattress in the washing machine. But it’s also not necessary, since it fortunately doesn’t contain any chemicals. While with other mattresses, you may need to wash the cover before use due to residual chemicals, you can feel completely safe with our baby mattresses. They have never been exposed to pesticides, herbicides, synthetic substances, or anything like that. At Cocoon, you get the pure product – nothing else.
During periods where accidents might happen in the crib, whether from diapers, spit-up, or drool, we recommend using our breathable baby waterproof mattress protectors. They can be easily washed in the washing machine at up to 60 degrees, so the crib can quickly and easily be made ready again.
It is not recommended to reuse a baby mattress from your first child for the next one, or to use a mattress that might have come with a second-hand crib. While it’s great in terms of sustainability when items can be passed down or reused, a baby mattress is not one of them.
The reason is that an old mattress may harbor a lot of dust mites and other allergens from the previous home. Additionally, any mattress will mold itself to the child who has slept on it, making it specific to that child – much like with shoes. Therefore, much of the comfort is lost by allowing your baby to sleep on a used mattress.
The conclusion is clear: Buy a new mattress for each child you have.
As parents, if there’s anything we want, it’s to give our little ones the best start in life. This largely involves not exposing them to unnecessary chemicals and allergens. Our children spend a large portion of their first years sleeping. Therefore, it’s important to consider the chemicals your child is surrounded by during sleep, and to try to reduce the use of chemical-laden products for children, especially around the crib.
